Editorial: Three Tips To Understand Student Fees Better

Student fees can be difficult to understand sometimes, so here are three tips to understand them better. First, think of student fees as taxes. Walter P. May notes in his article ''The History of Student Governance in Higher Education” in College Student Affairs Journal that early in higher education, students who lived at school became dissatisfied with their curriculum. So, they pooled their money together to fund additional lectures that interested them. For example, they funded lectures on Roman history, astronomy and other topics; extracurricular lectures that enriched their education beyond the basic curriculum such as math and grammar. This organized money-pooling represents the beginning of both student government and student fees. Today, the University collects student fees on student government’s behalf, like an employer collects your taxes on the federal government’s behalf. The fees are the result of the student body enacting a fee by student vote to fund services f...

Report: No Permit, Residential Students Make-up Most Fall Parking Citations

Sign to event parking at The University of Texas at Tyler. (Source: James Hescock)  Over Christmas Break, I decided to look into the parking issue on-campus, starting with enforcement. I obtained the record of all parking citations for fall 2023 by a public information act request. Here is what I found. At UT-Tyler, parking enforcement issued 380 parking citations over the fall 2023 semester. It issued 152 citations for Parking Without A Valid Permit, 59 for Improper Space/Over Line and 48 for Parking In Area Not Designated (meaning, residential students parking on-campus). Overall, these were the top three violations and they made up 40%, 15% and 13% of all violations respectively. The parking department also received approximately 30 appeals from students, faculty and staff, according to a separate information request. Yet, on Nov. 14, Parking Appeals Committee Chair Ronald Carnes III, told student government that his committee receives roughly 30 to ...

Editorial: Welcome to Patriot Weekly’s First Issue

(Source : James Hescock) Hello and welcome to Patriot Weekly’s first issue! I am James Hescock, publisher of Patriot Weekly and UT-Tyler alumnus. I started blogging in 2016 when I saw what appeared to be an information gap between the student body and leadership on-campus. For instance, I found everyday students were often unaware of important decisions happening in their name, such as fee increase proposals, tuition increases and other policy changes. I started my blog to both inform students and to share my views on campus issues. Patriot Weekly is an attempt to continue this effort and to close the information gap I perceive exists between students and important campus news. In Patriot Weekly , I hope to spread important news, but also share this space with other campus voices who have important messages to share with the student body. So, if you have something to say that you want to share with other students, then I hope you will consider writing a guest essay for Patr...
